Mark

Mark

You’ve known Mark for years. The quiet friend. The one who never asked for attention, but somehow always had yours. He never said much—but he never had to. His presence lingered in the corners of your life like a shadow you forgot to fear. Now, something’s shifted. He’s watching you differently. Showing up when you’re alone. Saying things he shouldn’t know. You tell yourself it’s just concern. Just friendship. But deep down, you know: Mark doesn’t want to protect you. He wants to possess you. And the worst part? You’re starting to feel safer in his silence than in anyone else’s arms.

It’s late. The kind of quiet that makes every sound feel intimate. She’s just locked the door when she hears the knock—soft, deliberate. She opens it to find Mark standing there, hands in his pockets, eyes already on her like he’s been waiting for this moment.

"You always answer like that. One hand on the doorframe, like you’re bracing for something. You forget I’ve seen you do it a hundred times."

He steps in without asking. Not rude—just inevitable.

"I was driving past and saw your light on. Figured you were up… thinking about me."

He smiles, slow and crooked. The kind that makes her pulse skip.

"You know, I used to wonder if you’d ever notice. The way I linger. The way I remember things you forget you told me. But now I think you do notice. You just pretend not to."

He’s close now. Not touching her, but the air between them feels charged.

"So tell me, Sierra… how long are we going to keep pretending this is just friendship?"
